The Magus of the Coffer's casting cost is actually pretty good. A 4/4 with a good ability for five is pretty decent. You can also use him to gain an excellent black mana source provided you're playing a mono black deck. He's best used in a deck that would benefit from tons of mana, such as lifedraining, or cards with high but repeatable mana activation costs such as Fevered Convulsions or Consumptive Goo. Or of course, you can use him to summon the big bad monsters like Visara the Dreadful or Avatar of Woe earlier than you otherwise could.

If used to supplement cabal coffers it offers for hideous amounts of mana being put into play. It's a bit slow with the 4B mana cost, but hey it's black who cares that's turn three with a dark ritual.

I'd suggest either putting this in a reanimator/drain life deck or in a multiplayer deck assuming you're going for long games. It's a bit big though, folks tend to get a little wary of anything bigger than a 3/3 and any experienced magic player knows that blowing it up will set you back significantly in the mana department. I give it a three, because it's good, but not nearly as good as the original coffers.
