when this card was standard legal, heartbeat beat most standard decks. Despite the fact that your opponent gets extra mana, they won't be ready for it. They'll over extend themselves, puke their hand, and pass turn. Most decks with this card either A) feel like putting an enchantment on the field that makes the game go faster or, more likely, B) play it, then win on that turn OR the following turn. Heartbeat of Spring is a powerful combo card.

Scott said it perfectly. My first competitive deck was a Red/White Mana Flare deck. Turn three mana flare, your opponent gets something good out, but then the cards in your deck overwhelm them. They end up emptying their hand while you put out massive creatures that keep them playing defense until you finish them off. I miss those days of massive mana.

Honestly this card is more powerful than most give it credit for. Most decks that will run this card will be designed around having the extra mana. And yes it works also for the opponents decks, they will not be ready for it in most games. The deck that runs this card will have a mana curve that is prepared for this card and will be designed to unleash the incredible combos that can be pulled off with a card of this nature. Heartbeat decks have been running rampant and are consistent tournement winners, it deserves all 5 stars.

An interesting card to be sure, however it should be played with caution and only against a deck your fairly familiar with, since you would want to know what your opponent can do with 2x Mana.
