To all the haters out there... Are you mad? This card was a champ back in its prime. It was THE BEST CREATURE EVER PRINTED at the time. After the odyssey block, I dropped this bad boy turn 1 or 2 at least 50% of the time. Also, she can block an 8/8, tap to remove from combat and destroy another beastly creature!!!! Avatar of woe could take on the 2 biggest, baddest creatures in the game by herself without breaking a sweat, and then swing for 6 unblockable next turn or just continue to be an impenetrable wall. The best card of the prophecy set and my favorite creature ever! Cheers to you avatar of woe!

this card is way to easy to get out for 2 mana if you know what your doing i used to have 4 in my black/red deck. between cycling, eather flash, pestilance, earth quake, or pyroclasm. this card is coming out fast and will change the game in your favor fast enough that even if it doesnt the rest of my corrupts or red burn will win the game for me.

I love this card very much. If you're talking favorite creature in the entire game this would probably be it for me. Now i know what the other reviewers are saying. that it costs too much and its too big or whatever. I have one word for everyone: Cycling. i have this card in my cycling deck where i can normally get it out turn 3. So if you know what you're doing getting this card out shouldn't be a problem.

As many others have stated, when this card was printed one could moan about the casting cost. Now, with Traumatize, Mind Funerals, Nemesis of Reason (the list goes on...) I can get this guy out in NO time. I really like Mind Funeral as I've been able to pump this guy out on the fourth turn (granted I was lucky with my funeral). And the tap effect does not limit itself to non-black or non-artifact targets and can't be regenerated. Basically this is once-per-turn Terminate. Simply awesome...

so heres the deal to all doubters of this beast-mo card, in a blue and black deck combo avatar of woe with veldkin grafters, then for 1b/1u you can tap destroy tap destroy tap destroy.then since the avatar will have one or two +1-+1 counters on it after you clear the opponents feild you can storm in for 7 or 8 opponent damage also one of the best art peices in MTG

To all you "no hope of ten creatures in all graveyards" people... you must not play black. burried alive, spellshapers, any good dredge card, wrath of god or even just making yourself discard a few creatures. hell, just play blood pets and other kamikaze types. this isnt a newby card. its blacks answer to green creature superiority, as was proven in tournaments for years

nothing short of 5 stars for multiplayer, when playing this after a 'damnation' or 'wrath of god' you will likely be able to play it for 2 mana. smash it!

for all of you that say 8 mana is too hard to play. black has buried alive, entomb, ranimate, animate dead, victimize, recurring nightmare and a few other reanimating cards. this card is built for graveyard play. not only does it put things in your opponents grayeyards to steal via scion of darkness or zombify or whatever you choose but it will make your next one or 2 cheaper. im not saying this is the best creature ever but its in the top ten for sure and top 3 of black.

Everybody has an opinion about which is better Avatar of Woe or Visara the Dreadful. I'll have to put my money on our Avatar here. Visara is amazing. And cheaper than Avatar of Woe. But before you go writing Woe off, remember one thing.....Avatar of Woe is NOT legendary. Play one damnation, dump woe out for 2 black mana, then (if you playing a black/blue deck) clone her. Next step? Watch your opponents cry....lol

Ok first of all this thing beats everything in magic except Avatar of Fury, Darksteel Collosus, and Kaldra(in full form). I lost once to a guy because he had one of these in play on the second turn (amaizing huh) well this guy destoyed my entire library and then destroyed me. The same thing happened thirtyfive times. Finaly i just got kaldra out in play an tore him... well you get the point. This Card in AMAIZING, AMAIZING, and did i mention AMAIZING

Well whenever they re-printed this, traumatize and glimpse is the main thing that makes this card much more worth it. Not mcu h else to say except be weary cause a turn two glimpse could spell a turn three avatar of woe. Nasty, very nasty.

Do not listen to those complaining of the casting cost. Black cards generally tend to cost more mana anyways. And with Cabal Coffers and Cabal Ritual... there's absolutely no reason to not have enough mana to play Avatar of Woe.

Trust me, casting this monster in a game can put some opportunities at your disposal. It's a great creature card, and easily worth double of what it sells for.

Ha! Use an Elvish Piper to bring her out for ONE GREEN! Then, use a Bifurcate to bring another one out for four. Or, play Thicket Elemental, pay the kicker, and play a Worldly Tutor to get out a 4/4 and the Avatar. Nasty card. Or use a Belbe's Portal. So many ways to get out BIG NASTY EXPENSIVE cards for CHEAP! Tempting Wurm if you don't fear what the opponent may drop.

I give this a five star for two reasons...

1. It's a huge creature with a very useful ability.

2. It supplements Volrath, The Fallen very nicely.

All you need is a turn two Volrath (2 dark rituals) and on the third turn you can deal upwards to 14+ damage.

Ok look yall. TO me there are very few decks in which they revolve around this one card. Everyone here is talking as if this is the only card in the deck. It is devastating no matter what. If you have two mana out in a black deck you can pop out good to mediocre creatures every turn and they're easy to sacrafice. Black Knight is just one example. Bad moom is another. The list is endless. But get this badboy out and you're gonna put a whomping on someone. It works great in counterspell decks and destruction decks.

This is a great card. Yes, the mana cost is kind of heavy, but there are alternative ways of getting it out onto the board. You could use Elvish Piper, Survival of the Fittest and Recurring Nightmare, or just a lot of multi-color producing mana cards. This creature is virtually unblockable and the abilities are by far some of the best in the game.

Why pay any of the mana cost? I can put it into play after two or three turns. All you need is starting out with it in your hand and a fanatical devotion along with a cheap creature like an urborg skeleton. Summon the skeleton and then wait until you can get a dark ritual or mind rot or keep drawing cards until you can discard it then sacrifice the skeleton to regenerate if for free. This can work with any creature as long as you have a fanatical devotion or breath of life. So I think getting a giant like the avatar of woe or any other for free at the very least of turn three is great.

All I have to say is that this card is unbelievable! I play blue/black, and it is quite easy to dish out the counterspells and power sinks until I can get my Woe out. Add Vesuvan Doppelgangers or Clones to devastate your opponent even more!

The woe,
I would say play it in a discarding deck try getting the new torment starter Insanity
if you play with multiple woes . but just having one in any deck would be great but i think everyone should get 2 or more woes if you want a deck to focus around them.
A great card and anyone that plays black remotely should get atleast one.

This is one of my favorite MTG cards ever. Excellent mechanic, great P/T (especially for black), and can easily win the game for you if you can manage to drop it.

That's the reason, however, that I didn't give it 5 stars. This is a very expensive card (mana cost-wise). You almost have to make her the focus of your deck to have any hope of seeing her on the battlefield (such as running green mana acceleration with your black, which can be messy and lack synergy elsewhere).

Personally, I've always relegated Avatar to my 5-color reanimator deck, where she is absolutely amazing. Dropping a first or second turn Avatar of Woe is pretty devastating to any opponent. Six damage to the face every turn, along with the option to eliminate almost all possible creatures, is just brutal.

Just occurred to me that some might think I'm BS-ing about first turn avatar. It goes like so:

Swamp --> Dark Ritual --> Putrid Imp (discard avatar to give it flying) --> Animate Dead on Avatar. Yeah, she's 5/5 now, but a swing every turn ends the game just as quickly, and you're controlling the board the rest of the game. You basically win.

But yes, a very powerful, but situational card. Probably my very favorite.

Great card if used properly. I think it needs to be pointed out to the guy from Garden Grove that his combo with Fanatical Devotion will not work the way he is suggesting. You cannot regenerate something that is in the graveyard. You must regenerate something at the time it would go to the graveyard, or not at all. There is a huge difference between regenerating something and returning it from your graveyard to play. Check the rules.

even without the tap to destroy target non-black creature its still great. Play it in a discard deck along with book burning (red by the way), Buried live, exhume, gravedigger, barbed shocker, and damnation, oh and don't forget your mortivores!

Avatar or woe is one of those cards that is good, but arguably so. I personally run two copies of it in my MBC(mono-black control), its primary purpose (as I use it) is a mid-late game finisher. The discount is difficult to get, but i've done it before. I've noticed that the primary complaints of this card is that, ignoring the discount, it costs a massive 8 mana to play. I get around this by using Cabal Coffers(a staple for ANY mono-black) and almost CONSTANTLY drop her into play by 6th turn as opposed to 8th. She is good creature control, and if you need to push extra damage, she smashes in for 6 evasive each turn. I wouldn't advise running a deck around this card simply because it is a creature and can be dealt with in any countless number of ways. I see this as an awesome support card (that's why i only use 2 as opposed to a set) and it can easily change the tide of any game, if not win it entirely, GIVEN THE CORRECT CIRCUMSTANCES, that's once again, why it is a support card. In the right place, it's wonderful and balanced, moreover, honestly, if the regular casting cost were any cheaper it would be broken. The only thing keeping me from giving this a perfect five is because of it's huge cost, which limits the number of decks that it would run well in. Great card.

The Avatar of Woe, as with so many other high cost black creatures, is fantastic for culling your opponent's creature population with the tap kill or for swinging straight for the opponent via fear. So many people complain about the cost, and this reveals to me a total lack of creativity on their part. I have, in the past, had three in play on the first turn (Twas the perfect hand and highly unlikely: swamp, dark rit x 4, buried alive, living death. My opponent wept.). Seriously people, think before you make yourself sound dumb. This card is black. Black is the master color of necromancy. Gee, I wonder if I can find a way to dump this into my graveyard and then throw it straight into play from there using black of all colors. With some clever manipulation of your hand and graveyard this can be accomplished easily via such cards as Hidden Horror and Exhume. There are tons of options there. The only major flaw is a total weakness to enchantments and artifacts in black. I haven't kept up with Magic lately so I can't say how well this would play in limited, but the AoW is a mighty fine game breaker in a constructed deck.

This card is very expensive, both in real-world and mana cost. I have tried a couple of decks featuring this card, and in a number of games it was the only reason I won. The mana cost complaints are offset by the 10-creature condition, which add up fast in multiplayer. If you have a deck that is mono-black or relies heavily on creaure removal, this card is a must. It works well with Mortivore & Lim-Dul, The Necromancer.

The casting cost does suck. But to get this card out by turn 5 I use "Quicksilver Amulet" and Urza's Incubator will cut the cost by 2 colorless and belbes portal will put the Avatar out for 3 mana. So go my MTG players get those cards to help get the biguns out!!!

If you love this creature, if you think it is an ok card or if you hate it you know it is an above average card. What makes this card better is if you were to play it in an Oath deck or maybe you could use KiKu to get all those cretures into their graves or simply wait late in the game and play that WRATH OF GOD card.

Biggest problem, high cost or need 10 creatures dead. My suggestion, run four Avatars of Woe and at least two Ashnod's Altar. The Altar drops for three and adds two colorless mana for each creature the controller sacrifices, without tapping. So whether it's by killing your own creatures for the discount or pumping your mana pool, the Altar's a big help. Throw in some Terrors and if you're playing multiplayer, Innocent Blood( 1 black mana: each player sacrifices a creature) and you'll meet the 10 dead creatures discount easily.

I run this card in a Black/Blue creature kill/unblockable/color change deck. Terrors, a few other color dependant creature kill spells, and creatures that "destroy target white creature when put in the graveyard" for example get her out much quicker. And to top it off, Ashnod's Altar (Artifact that drops for 3, and doesn't tap, "Sacrifice a creature: Add two colorless mana to your mana pool.")will help get her out faster one way or another.

Avatar of Woe needs to be used in the right hands. Personally, I use it in combination with my black and blue deck that mills through opponents libraries quickly and then keeps what they have under control. Glimpse the unthinkable, traumatize, Circu, and instant death to what creatures my opponent is able to get out quickly. By the third or fourth turn it can be played for 2 instead of eight. Then hit your opponent with haunting echoes once you have a few avatars under your control. Hoping that you get eight mana out in time to have her change the the tide of the game is unrealistic.

Expensive? Yes. Big and nasty? Also yes. There are plenty of ways to get it out quickly, eight mana isn't really that big of a thing to deal with. Especially if you're using black/green. Or mono black with dark ritual, and cabal coffers. Though the card isn't exceptional in a tournament situation, it's very nasty in casual. Recommended.

If you have a lot of creature removal, land removal, and discards in your deck this card is beautiful. The combination gives you some time to actually build up enough mana or remove enough creatures to get her out making her a nice addition to have with a few Visara

People say to forget about the discount.... well I think that it is rubbish to say that.... You can easily get ten creatures in all graveyards, using cards such as Hand of Death, Dark Banishing, terror and also Buried alive... hell you can even put the Avatar of woe in your graveyard and then use raise dead on it... stick a defense of the heart in ur deck... and then keep a few tranquility to destroy any pacifism... problem solved...!!! Avatar of Woe is an excellent card, no argument!!

Ok, first of all, this is by no where near the best creature in magic..there are so many other creatures/cards(tinker, earthcraft, time walk..so many others.) that are just as good and better. But don't get me wrong, its a good card none the less. I run two in my mono reanimator and get her or something just as good out 1st turn. 1 swamp, dark ritual, entomb, exhume, the game is high in your favor.

Ok, really, I would rate this card a 3.5. Sure, it's one heck of a beast when it's out, but how often are you going to get it out? I've played it 3 times, none of it aided by the discount, and once because of a Howling Mine (Excellent card, BTW). Basically, if you REALLY want to play it, use a W/B deck. WoG one turn, Next turn, Drop AoW for 2. Very easy, very effective. Great card when out, but, like all the Avatars, the 8 mana cost is too much.

hey pep's.this card is great in it's way.the only down side is that it take's a while to get on the board.although when it get's out there it is dominant, and hard to get undercontrol.so that's why i rate it so high,i have 3 had 4 at one time, but i only use 2 if i remember right.peace out.

I have something to say to everyone who is worried about the casting cost of this card: ENTOMB OR BURIED ALIVE. THEN EXPUNGE OR HELL'S CARETAKER (or any cards like this). I have gotten this card out on turn 3 before.

If you use this, here is a hefty combo, get a fallen angel out and then use it to destroy creatures for a good purpose...then pay the 2 mana

Turn 1: entomb, Turn 2: exhume. and there is your turn 2 woe. It is still only one creature though and is easy to kill.

This card costs way too much to put in a deck unless you have something like a breath of life or zombify, then its only 4 mana. Also An elvish piper or chainer gets it out cheaply. The only problem is if its stolen from you...

This is a good card but not graet. It costs to much to cast in a mono black deck, but if you have a black/green,or black/white deck with armageddon,or green mana production it might be worth it

I personally like the card. I have two im my deck and aiming to get 4. However in a mono black deck the card is usless. My frined can creame me with his goblin deck before i get one out. The best use for this card i would say would be in my black and red deck. Casting devistation and or obliterate would allow me to get it out for two but my advice is only use it if your deck is two or more colors.

As people have said before, this card is good, but not too-good. Sure it has some great abilities: fear, and tap to kill any creature. I a black creature destruction deck, the ability to destroy any creature is great (most cards a destroy any non-black, non-artifact creature.) Still, it costs a fortune. Eight mana will take a while to play, even with mana-drop. And getting 10 creature in the graveyard is no small feat, either, even in a creature destruction deck.

Taking all of that into consideration, cards like Dark Ritual (B, 3 B mana) and Cabal's Ritual (B1, 3 B mana and Threshold - 5 B mana) make summonging Avatar of Woe possible in the earlier stages of the game. (Correct me if I'm wrong on those cards. I know that cards like them exist, I'm just not sure on the names.)

Still, cards that prevent a creature from attacking and blocking, and even from using abilities, make quick work of the Avatar. There are cards in every color that do that; it's just a question of whether or not your opponent has those cards in his or her deck.

Another point that was made: What kind of opponent are you playing? This card won't do much good against a token deck, because there are too many creatures to destroy and you can be swarmed. Playing against a deck with black or artifact creature also negates the Avatar's fear ability.

All in all, Avatar of Woe is your average rare card. It has great abilities, but its mana cost prevents it from being over-powered. It's also just another creature card: it can be easily altered and/or subdued. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

Not so hot except in carefully planned cases.

In a deck with a few Millstones or Grindstones, however, this puppy will cast for BB in no time.

Eternal Warrior enchantment will let you use it's beef to kill, while also using its uber-ability iin the same turn.

Ok well first off what all real time magic players play all mana down?
And second i agree with the guy that said about the fattys.
When i make my decks i nver really llok at the creature's power and defence. I look at mana cost and abilities.
By the time you get this card out (if you hard cast her) I'd be done but a shackles on her.
But if anyone knows what i'm talking about ya can get her out on first turn if ya know what deck to build and how to do it. And trust me its not with all mana down. And it does work cause i've taken an akroma first turn. Kinda funny to hit em in the face for 6 the first turn.

Not a bad card if early game you use the cheap wizard who forces your opponent to discard 10 cards or the gllimpse one that does the same doing that gives a good chancew to get it out cheaply maybe turn 4 or 5? otherwise it is way too expensive maybe use the combo to discard it and out it into play both ways work good but not the best card out there.

Many people will say that this creature has way too big a cost, and it does, but that doesnt make it bad, just decent. Also for all the newbs out there who like it just because it kills things and they cant regenerate, try picking up a Shauku, Endbringer. Shauku may have an upkeep, but its worth it for annihilating opponents ranks, and with seeker of skybreaks, u can remove 5 creatures from the game, and shauku gets +5/+5 forever. Noobs, get shauku and quit gawking over this decent at best card.

This card is useful in most black decks for its ability to tap and destroy any one creature. However it has a large mana cost making it usless in the beginning stages of the game. I would not recomend more than two in any deck and it is best played in a black mono-colored deck.

This card is far to expensive. as for the 10 cards in the graveyard, in practice i have found that except in a 3 way game you can get the 8 mana faster... That having been said i find it works well in a deck supplemented by other anti-creature cards such as

this is an okay card. It is not the best card in the game but no the worst. It cost way to much but if u can get it out u can change the game. There many ways to get rid of creatures so if u are just building a deck around this card I would not advise it. I only have two and they are in my black deck. They have saved me some times but I also like to discard Them to my volrath and make him a great creature. So there pros and cons for this card

it really agrivates me when new magic players see a fatty and instantly its the best card ever. first of all the woe is nothing more than an average card. i mean, its ok- if you can play it. eight mana is a tough squeeze, and forget about getting her with the discount (10 creatures). I see use for the woe in a black white deck. wrath of god to clear the board and then drop the woe for two black. but other than that, i have played many games where the woe has been out and done NOTHING to me. a card as simple as a pacifism, or voice of all, or story circle make this card as useless as any. by the time you can get an avatar of woe out, if the other person is even remotley good you should be at 3 health anyway.

If you're playing casual multiplayer with your friends Woe is decent, if you're playing more serious 1 vs 1 the cons tend to out weigh the pros. For all the cards you put into your deck trying to get this one out you could be dealing damage to your oponent already. Shes a fatty with a *tap* destroy ability big friggin whoop. While you're hoping for the right cards to get her out my blue black deck will be shreading yours to peices. And if you think that will just help you play her, my withered wretch and other cards will dump your graveyard out of the game. Leaving you with a Woe in hand , nothing on the feild and nothing in your deck.

This card is mediocre at best. I don't like it. True when it hits the board it will dramatically change the game in your favor. But getting this out recquires a dark ritual or 8 turns to get out. You will most likeley see this card in a mono black deck. The problem with these decks is you cant handle enchantments or artifacts. So your best chance would be speed. But this big 8 to cast thing in your hand will just sit there uselessly. And if youve had this card out before. You realize how much damage it can do. But you also want to tap it to destroy a creature. So you never get an opportunity to attack. I just dont think its a very good card.

SO, THIS AVATAR OF WOE IS GREAT HUH?

IF THATS TRUE, I WOULD ENJOY ANYONE THAT THINKS SO,

TO TRY TO BEAT A PLATED SLAGWURM WITH IT!!! WHY? IT'S SIMPLE.

IT SIMPLY CAN'T BE DONE!!! HAHAHA! THAT'S WHY MY 5 COLOR DECK CAN'T LOSE.

BECAUSE OF THE SLAGWURMS. ONCE EVEN ONE IS IN PLAY YOU LOSE.
