Unfortunately damage doesn't go on the stack anymore... so you'll have to choose to gain life OR deal damage with your blocking creature. Ofcourse you can still block a creatures and gain life... however, you won't kill the attacking creature.
Nevertheless, this is another lovely utility-land that does something tricky. Ofcourse Diamond Valley is way better, but who has the money for those older cards nowadays...? This is a very nice alternative, and well balanced. ;)
